Modern Upholstery
Modern upholstery has developed for a reason. It offers a more affordable but still comfortable range of seating. At lot of contemporary designs would not even be possible with traditional materials and techniques. The term ‘modern’ in upholstery, refers to pieces designed and made after 1950, predominantly using foam. So even a ‘modern’ piece can have great sentimental value for someone and may have been in their family as long as they remember. Modern foam is usually a PU (polyurethane) foam, a plastic made from oil and unfortunately most modern upholstery is designed with a short life span. Having a piece of furniture reupholstered by a good upholsterer should give you a piece with much better longevity than the average high street brand. So even with the use of PU foam reupholstering can be considered more sustainable than buying new. However, I have developed an option for modern upholstery, using new products that are either in the majority made from recycled plastic or natural (so biodegradable) products. AND this option, while still meeting UK fire regulations, is free of the chemical fire retardants that are so bad for people, pets and planet. making it even more sustainable.
Modern upholstered pieces are everywhere, but that does not mean you can’t have a beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind piece. As well as offering the classic foam and other sustainable filling options if your piece needs rebuilding from frame, I offer a recover service for pieces that are structurally sound but just need a nice new coat. Creating truly bespoke upholstery, just for you.
